Investment Casting Capabilities: Tolerances & Surface Finish

Both processes follow the lost wax route — the difference is the shell binder. Silicon sol (colloidal silica) delivers the highest accuracy; water glass offers excellent value for larger and higher-volume parts.

Tolerance grades follow the ISO 8062 system for castings. Final tolerance is confirmed against your drawing during engineering review.

How It Works

The Investment Casting Process, Step by Step

Every investment cast part begins as a wax pattern and ends as a finished, inspected component. Here is how your part moves through our foundry.

Wax Pattern Injection

Wax is injected into a metal die to form a precise pattern of your part — the "lost wax" that gives the process its name.

Pattern Assembly

Wax patterns are gated onto a central wax sprue to build a tree, allowing many parts to be cast in a single pour.

Ceramic Shell Building

The tree is dipped in ceramic slurry and coated with refractory stucco, layer by layer, using silicon sol or water glass binder.

Dewaxing

Steam autoclaving melts the wax out of the shell, leaving a precise, heat-resistant ceramic cavity.

Melting & Pouring

Preheated shells are filled with molten metal at controlled temperature. Chemistry is verified before each pour.

Finishing & Inspection

Parts are cut from the tree, ground, heat treated and machined as required, then dimensionally and metallurgically inspected.

What is investment casting?
Investment casting, also called lost wax casting or precision casting, forms parts from a wax pattern coated with a ceramic shell. The wax is melted out and the cavity is filled with molten metal, producing near-net-shape components with smooth surfaces and tight tolerances.
Which materials can be investment cast?
We cast stainless steel (SUS304, SUS316, 1.4301), stainless iron (201, 420, 430), carbon steel (A3, Q235, 45), alloy steel (20Cr, 20CrMo, 40Cr, 40CrMo, 42CrMo and similar), brass (H59, H62, H75, H80), red copper, bronze and white copper — and the list is not limited to these.
What part sizes and tolerances can you achieve?
Silicon sol process: 0.05–50 kg, CT4–CT6, Ra 3.2–6.3 μm. Water glass process: 0.10–100 kg, CT6–CT8, Ra 6.3–12.5 μm. Final tolerances are confirmed against your drawing.
Do you offer post-casting machining and surface treatment?
Yes — ordinary, mirror, electrolytic and brushed polishing, grinding, heat treatment, drilling and tapping, plating, powder coating, zinc and chrome plating, tumbling polishing and electro-polishing.

What is the difference between investment casting and sand casting?
Investment casting uses a disposable wax pattern and ceramic shell, giving smoother surfaces (Ra 3.2–6.3 μm), tighter tolerances (CT4–CT8) and more complex geometry. Sand casting suits larger, simpler parts at lower tooling cost.
